Royal Doulton 'The Mask' Figurine Restoration
The 6.7-inch (17 cm) tall Doulton & Co. figurine, 'The Mask,' has been restored to museum standard. Designed by Leslie Harradine in the Art Deco style, the piece, which was originally released in 1924 and produced until 1938, required significant attention due to chips on the ruff and skirt. The restoration involved reconstruction, colour-matching, and glaze-matching to make the figure look as good as new.
'The Mask' depicts a 1920s girl in an orange and black pantalooned costume, holding a mask. Cupid sits atop a tree stump, partially hidden behind her skirt. The base features the Doulton & Co. printed mark and the handwritten title. Achieving a precise match for the original black and 1920s-era orange handpainting was a priority, as that colour can be notoriously difficult to replicate today due to now-banned chemical additives historically used in its pigment.
